At Sea - Equator Crossing

The big event today was the Equator Crossing ceremony. It was a very cute event but not quite as wild as last year.

King Neptune is a real mean guy. Something I never knew before, he has a very thick Hungarian accent. If fact, he sounds exactly like the classic guitar player.

King Neptune enters the pool deck with his entourage. He is here to hold court. Anyone present that has never crossed the equator by sea will be found guilty of being a pollywog. Pollywogs must go through a transformation to become Shellbacks if they wish to go on. First an incarcerated Pollywog is brought before the King. He begs for leniency. The King sentences him to be operated on to become a Shellback. The King then makes a short speech. No one can understand him so the narrator repeats in more understandable English, after which the King replies, “that’s what I just said!” The victim is dragged away to the operating table where all kinds of goop are poured over him or her. Then he must lay down upon the operating table, covered with a sheet, and the operation commences. First the anesthetic is applied. It’s a large wooden mallet. The doctor then produces a large hand saw and starts sawing. Soon he extracts a large meaty bone or in one case a large Kingfish. The victim is then cast upon the waters which in this ceremony is the pool. All this time drinks are being carried around. Today’s ceremonial drink is red wine and rum on ice and lots of water. No make that mostly water. Almost no taste at all. Of course you can ask for whatever you want.

This play is very cute and everyone seems to enjoy it. It is a good thing it is windy out because it is very hot and humid. The sun is ridiculously strong. Oh Yeah. Duh, we are on the equator.
