AT SEA EN ROUTE TO CHAN MAY, VIETNAM

Chan May is very close to Da Nang, if that sounds more familiar. Last year the weather was too bad for us to dock in Chan May so we docked in Da Nang and still saw the same attractions. They must not be very far apart. This must be a nicer harbor for passengers. Some of these cargo ports are covered in grease and do not have modern bumpers to keep the ships from getting scraped and marked.

When we got up this morning the sun was shinning brightly. This was the first time we saw it in a long time. Still, the horizon was smoggy.

On the front page of today’s Chicago Tribune, there is an article about the smog problem in China. They have promised to do something about it many times but nothing changes. Now they threaten to close factories if they do not fix the problems.

I guess I am back on my soap box again. I see that literally half the planet is covered in smog. I hear all these yoyos claiming we are the most polluted and most polluting country. Anyone breathing, smelling, or with sight can easily tell the difference. I finally heard one group that claims there is a reason. The auto and fuel industries are behind this and are pushing it to get the government to subsidize development of alternative and less polluting vehicles and energy. If they get enough people to believe we are the most polluted and are the most polluting, maybe they can get something for nothing. This whole business about global warming is just a part of it.

I agree strongly that we need some kind of energy that will make us non dependent on the Arabs and other untrustworthy peoples and less pollutants, would be great for everyone. But if the US were to suddenly stop producing any pollutants at all, it would not even make a dent in the global situation. I see no answer to getting all these very poor to stop burning garbage, wood, and coal.

It was also pointed out that there is no proof that there is global warming and if so, that it is caused by man. There have been warmer and colder periods since the beginning of the planet. They are caused by sun spots and warming and cooling of the sun and our orbit around the sun among other things that have caused warming and cooling of the Earth. Another article talks about the Polar Bears. We keep hearing that because the ice packs are melting they will become extinct. Just the opposite seems true. Because of warmer weather there are far more things for them to eat and it is easier to live. Their populations are up ten fold and they may have to be culled or moved in some areas.

Mean time, I think they have finally found a way to keep down the population of these poorer peoples in third world and underdeveloped countries. They are killing themselves with their destroying of the air.
